Dr. Oz Vein Treatment, Horse Chestnut, Not Best Option

Dr. Oz recently promoted the use of horse chestnut extract to treat varicose veins during a segment on his television show.  While Dr. Oz is a respected authority on many medical issues, his promotion of this herbal supplement is not consistent with current accepted knowledge of the best methods for treating varicose and spider veins.

Horse chestnut extract has been around for many decades and has been used intermittently in an attempt to relieve aching and fatigue in the legs (common symptoms of venous insufficiency).  While some patients report experiencing a benefit when using horse chestnut extract, it should by no means be expected to aid the majority of those with varicose veins. There is also no conclusive clinical evidence that it reduces the risk of phlebitis (blood clots), skin damage and ulceration that can accompany untreated venous disease. Furthermore, this herbal supplement does nothing to eradicate the unsightly spider veins that are a cosmetic issue for many patients.

While horse chestnut is unlikely to be harmful, improperly treated venous disease can be. Patients should be aware that the most successful and effective method of treatment of venous insufficiency is the Venefit Procedure (formerly known as VNUS Closure), microphlebectomy and sclerotherapy. All of these procedures, when used in the proper circumstances, provide excellent therapy with little down time and immediate recovery.

People with achy, heavy legs, cramping, and restless leg syndrome (all associated with varicose veins) should call for a free vein evaluation with either Dr. Rosenberg or Dr. McNeill. Capitol Vein & Laser is a regional leader in venous disease. The vascular surgical training of both physicians ensures you will receive a superior evaluation and treatment plan, created to meet your individual needs as a patient.
