Show Your Legs After Sclerotherapy

It's summer time—prime weather for bikinis, bathing suits, skirts and shorts. Now is also the time when spider veins are most visible.

Many of my patients were so self-conscious of these little purple and red veins that they would wear long pants even in 90+ degree weather. They avoided the pool and the beach to keep from having to expose their legs.

Spider veins are primarily a cosmetic issue. They do not turn into varicose veins or pose much of a health risk. But, spider veins do tend to increase in distribution. As they become more visible as time passes, these tiny little veins can be a big source of embarrassment.

Beware of so-called "miracle" creams. Many have been advertised as a cure but unfortunately the results are less than conclusive.

The best solution for eliminating spider veins is sclerotherapy. This treatment is effective because it causes spider veins to shrink to the point where the body will eventually absorb them. The procedure involves special medication administered into the veins with an ultra-thin needle, and over a period of weeks or months the visibility of the veins fade.

We welcome comments or questions about sclerotherapy or varicose veins. If you would like specific answers to your questions, please request a free cosmetic consultation at any of our offices located in Frederick, MD; Bethesda, MD; Leesburg, VA or Charles Town, WV.
